In the world of Tantra and yogic spirituality, the term chakra often arises—but what does it really mean? Are chakras just colorful symbols on a chart, or is there something deeper, more alive, waiting to be explored within us?
The truth is: chakras are not just concepts—they are experiences.
They are powerful energy centers within the subtle body, each holding a unique frequency that influences our physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being.
When these chakras are awakened and aligned, we tap into a natural flow of vitality, clarity, and inner power. At the heart of this process lies Kundalini Shakti—the dormant life force coiled at the base of the spine, waiting to rise.
What Are Chakras?
Chakras are the energy centres with the body that mirror the effect of the energy bodies and communicate with particular organs in the physical body. The word chakra means “wheel” or “disk”. They are like energetic doorways where the universal energy ( cosmic energy) flows into the human system and influences our thoughts, emotions, archetypes and spirituality.
Traditional systems speak of seven main chakras.
Here’s a quick overview:
- Muladhara (Root Chakra) – Mula means root or base and adhar means support. Associated with grounding, survival, stability & sexuality.
- Svadhisthana (Sacral Chakra) – It’s name can mean “seat, foundation of one’s self,” where I am. This chakra is associated with birth and death, and fear.
- Manipura (Solar Plexus Chakra) – Manipura means ” the citadel of the jewel “. The word pura means abundance of fullness. Confidence, willpower, personal power.
- Anahata (Heart Chakra) – Anahata means” unstuck” or ” unbeaten” It represents the seat of love, compassion and healing.
- Vishuddha (Throat Chakra) – Vishuddha means ” purification or cleaning”. Associated with Truth, expression, communication.
- Ajna (Third Eye Chakra) – Ajna means command, perception or beyond wisdom. Associated with intuition, inner vision, clarity.
- Sahasrara (Crown Chakra) – Means thousand petaled or thousand spoked. This chakra is associated with spiritual connection, transcendence, divine union
When these chakras are open and balanced, energy flows freely. When blocked or overstimulated, we may feel emotionally stuck, physically unwell, or disconnected from purpose.
What Is Kundalini Energy?
Kundalini Shakti is the primordial energy that lies dormant at the base of the spine. Often symbolized as a coiled serpent, it is the spark of life, the sacred feminine energy that, when awakened, ascends through the chakras—purifying, energizing, and transforming the entire being.
Kundalini is not just a concept. It is a tangible experience—a force that, when awakened with care and guidance, leads to expanded consciousness, healing, and spiritual awakening.
Tantric practices are deeply rooted in awakening this energy not through force, but through devotion, awareness, and love.
Signs of Balanced vs. Blocked Chakras
Understanding your chakras can help you tune into your inner world with compassion and curiosity.
Here are some simple signs:
- Root Chakra imbalance-When prana, or life energy is stagnant, not flowing freely, it creates unconscious fear and emotional paralysis. If this blockage persists over time, it can build up into intense, uncontrollable anger. When this stagnated energy turns inward, it may manifest as physical or emotional illness. When projected outward, it can express itself as jealousy, aggression, violence, even fear of money.
- Sacral Chakra blockages-The second chakra, known as Svadhisthana, is deeply linked to the cycles of birth and death. It governs our relationships, emotional needs, and the pursuit of pleasure, while also being associated with tendencies toward violence and addiction. This chakra holds the reservoir of unconscious desires—particularly those of a sexual nature. Because of these deep emotional entanglements and attachments, many traditions say that elevating the kundalini energy beyond Svadhisthana is one of the most challenging steps on the spiritual path.
- Solar Plexus misalignment-The third chakra, Manipura, is where we process the beliefs and information we receive from the world around us. These inputs are either integrated or rejected based on how aligned they are with our inner truth and soul’s purpose. Only when an idea becomes a lived, embodied experience does it truly take root; otherwise, it remains just a concept in the mind. Manipura is also the meeting point of opposing forces within us, often giving rise to inner conflict, tension, and potential misuse of personal power.
- Heart Chakra closures-The unconscious side of the heart chakra can become overwhelmed by unresolved issues carried from the lower chakras and other energy bodies. When these accumulated burdens are not processed, they create an energetic blockage—like a traffic jam in the heart’s flow. This internal congestion can surface as emotional chaos or hysteria, reflecting the heart’s struggle to stay open and balanced.
- Throat Chakra issues-When this chakra is blocked or not functioning freely, a person may feel choked in their ability to express themselves and struggle to bring their inner desires into reality. Their true voice remains unheard, and their deepest longings remain unfulfilled.
- Third Eye blockage-When this chakra is experienced unconsciously, it can lead to a sense of heaviness, sleepiness, and lack of vitality. Without a clear sense of purpose, you may drift through life aimlessly, like a piece of wood floating on water. This scattered, unfocused energy—when left unchecked—can be taken over by the subconscious in ways that negatively impact both your physical health and mental well-being.
- Crown Chakra disconnection-The blossom floats gracefully on the surface, but its strength lies in the long stem reaching deep beneath the water. Anchored in the mud at the lake’s bottom, the roots draw essential nourishment. Without this muddy foundation and the hidden stem that channels its support, the flower could not bloom. What appears as a miracle above is actually the purest expression of the dense, dark earth below. The more fertile and rich the mud, the more radiant and extraordinary the flower becomes.
When balanced, each chakra becomes a portal to personal power, love, clarity, and sacred connection.
How to Awaken Your Chakras Gently
Awakening the chakras doesn’t require extreme techniques. In fact, it’s best approached with gentleness and groundedness.
Here are a few practices that can begin to stir this sacred energy within:
- Breathwork (Pranayama): Conscious breath connects body and energy, helping unblock stagnant emotions.
- Meditation & Visualization: Focus on each chakra with sound (mantra), color, and intention.
- Movement & Yoga: Specific asanas and spontaneous movement can stimulate energetic flow.
- Mantra Chanting: Sacred sounds like LAM, VAM, RAM resonate with and activate each chakra.
- Touch & Awareness: Conscious touch and awareness-based bodywork can awaken dormant centers safely.
It’s important to note: this is not a race. Awakening takes time, patience, and self-love.
Kundalini Rising: What to Expect
When Kundalini begins to rise, many experience a wide range of sensations—tingling, heat, spontaneous movements, emotional release, or bursts of insight. Some may enter deep states of silence or bliss, while others may face intense inner shifts.
That’s why guidance is essential. Working with a trained teacher ensures your experience is held with safety, care, and spiritual depth.
The Tantric Approach: Presence Over Power
In Tantra, awakening the chakras and Kundalini isn’t about chasing power or altered states. It’s about becoming more present, more alive, more real. The body is not bypassed—it becomes the temple. Emotions are not repressed—they become gateways.
This path is one of integration, not escape. And the goal isn’t to leave the body, but to become fully embodied—rooted in awareness, vibrating in truth, and open to love.
An Invitation to Your Energy Body
If you feel the call to explore your chakras, to meet yourself in deeper truth, or to awaken the dormant energy within, know this:
You are not broken.
Your energy body remembers.
Your awakening is waiting—with love, not force.
Let your journey begin with a breath. Let it be sacred. Let it be yours.
